The Apple That Astonished Paris
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Arkansas Pr (July, 1988)
Author: Billy Collins
Average review score:

Some gems
If you know and enjoy Billy's poems this volume is a necessity. There are some earlier pieces that are brilliantly focused and tight -- like a joke and a punchline. Others are more subtle, but always clear in language and meaning. There is no contemporary poet that I would recommend more highly.

Also check out The Best Cigarette CD for a great collection of Billy reading his work.

Poems that Examine our Humanness
Collins has a wonderful, dry wit that shines through many of his poems. He has gained quite a reputation as a highly accessible poet, meaning that his poems appeal to a wide audience. And perhaps this is one of the reasons why he was selected to be the Poet Laureate of the U.S.

To say that Collins' poems are "accessible" may seem a bit of a slight. For, while Collins' use of simple and spare language may mean the average reader won't need to go running to his or her dictionary every stanza, that is not to say his poems are pure fluff. For example, in "Flying to a Funeral," Collins captures the emotional flux caused by a death:...

Collins is light and playful in many of his poems. He highlights the mundane details of our lives and makes us delight in them, see them as something other than the dreariness we make them out to be. Collins is a very imaginative poet, as well. He is able to write about History as if it were a houseguest, or even write verse about "The Morning After My Death":...

In this collection, Billy Collins covers the standard poetic targets of love, death, and art. In between, he helps us see the universality of experience, peppering it with laughter at ourselves -- and our humanness.

Avenue X

13 Short Stories--- Including Sonja Blue
Avenue X is comprised of 13 short stories, some very good and other seemed very average. My favorite of the 13 was Avenue X. The following is a list of the short stories.

1. The Sign of the ASP- Cleopatra and the ruling of Egypt. How can she get power and keep power, with the help of a vampire.

2. Without Sin - 3. The one-eyed King- What happens to Robin Hood after he saves the castle and finds out he has and evil twin. Good story that has a lot of twists and turns...

4. Cavalerada- Bounty hunters in the old west finally meet their match.

5. Billy Fearless- Great story...From the day he could crawl Billy was always getting into trouble, and had no fear. Now he's going to stay in the haunted house in hope to claim the houses treasures and win the girl.

6. Firetruck no 5. -A private investigator hired to follow a millionaire's wife... What happens next, only time will tell.. 7. The thing from lovers lane-There's something in the mountain woods that's been there for a very long time. Now its on the loose and coming for the unexpected.

8. Vampire king of the gothic chicks- Wannabe Vampires watch out.. SONJA BLUE will get you..

9. Someone's in the Kitchen - Haunted rental house with a cook.

10. Furies in black leather- Things done in the past come back come back to get you.

11. The land of the reflected ones- Magic trick that backfires

12. Avenue X- What happens when a country girl moves to New York City... Great story that takes you through her changes from the soft to the very hard.

Overall a good books and a must for any Nancy Collins fan. Avenue X and the Sonja Blue stories were the top two stories.

A Perfect Sampler
This collection contains an excellent assortment of stories from one of the finest horror writers working today. Nancy Collins, best known for her Sonja Blue novels, is an extremely gifted writer. She possesses the rare ability to not just entertain but surprise the reader. To those that only know Nancy from her vampire novels, let this be your gateway into the many realms of her writing

The stories collected for this volume offer a nice selection of various genres. "The Sign of the Asp" transports you back in time to Ancient Egypt with an interesting twist on the story of Cleopatra. Nancy takes on the story of Jesus in "Without Sin". "Avenue X" is a gritty urban gothic tale. "Cavalerada" has a western flair. "Firetruck Truck No.5" is a detective story. I don't want to go into all the stories because I know some readers (like myself) like to be surprised. Let me just say that whatever your interest, from erotic horror to Southern gothic, Nancy has it covered. My favorite story would have to be "Billy Fearless", simply because I love a story with a punch line at the end.

Black Bart: The True Story of the West's Most Famous Stagecoach Robber
Published in Paperback by Pacific Transcriptions (November, 1992)
Authors: William Collins and Bruce Levene
Average review score:

Thoroughly researched; great read; some errors
This books is by far the most interesting and detailed biography of the West's most prolific stagecoach bandit. Three nonfiction books about Black Bart, including this one, were published in the 1990s; I've read them all. Collins and Levene put the most effort into researching Charles Boles' life, the men and circumstances involving his capture, conviction, and sentencing, and details of the times. They also try to get inside Boles' head in an effort to explain this obviously intelligent and courageous, but morally flawed, man. However, there are some obvious errors, most notable to me -- geography of Calaveras County, of which I am a resident. At one point the name of a minor character is spelled differently in two adjoining paragraphs. There are enough of these minor errors to cause me to question the accuracy of details that are not found in, or conflict with, other studies of Black Bart.

Attention History Lovers!
This is a well researched book. It reads very well. This is not your typical dry history book! I was lucky enough to meet one of the authors (Bill Collins) who was just as fascinating as his book!

The Catcher in the Rye : A Unit Plan

Author: Mary B. Collins

Worthwhile CD for Teachers
I bought this CD to help me with one of my classes and found it very helpful in teaching the novel. I usually created my own stuff but this time the expenditure was worth it. The disk contains Vocabulary exercises, quizs, tests, and everything else that teachers ought to do. It's practical and solid with the traditional approach. Above it, it's easy to use and very well organized.

Great tool for High School teachers
Being my first year as a high school teacher, I knew I would need some tools to help my first year go by without a hitch. This lesson plan (CD) did just the trick. I later bought one for The Crucible also. These each have 137 pages of activities, vocabulary, study guides, writing assignments and rubrics, tests, puzzles, and word searches. All I can say is wonderful. The other English teachers love them and out department head is looking into buying a series of the titles!

BUY THEM!

Collins Gem French Dictionary: French-English English-French
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (June, 1993)

Very useable
My sister recommended this book on the basis of the equally good Portugese version. I bought her a copy and then promptly used it myself. It is not a full reference work but a very useful carry-in-the-bag issue. Translations are more than adequate and although my French is beginner level I was easily able to cope. I have a more extensive dictionary as well but very rarely use it as the Cassel Gem so far has been very thorough and certainly covered the vocabulary and phrasing that I have come across and/or used.

the best little dictionary
I have had this dictionary for four years and it has never failed me. I only need search my big dictionary for the most obscure words. It is very easy to read and has the french equivalent of every form of the word, including adverbs and adjectives. It also has "keywords" that can take up a whole page showing all the different meanings in certain sentences. I have gone from beginner to fluent and this dictionary has helped me the whole way and will continue to.

Collins Gem German Dictionary: German-English/English-German (6th Edition)

A Useful Reference for Traveling German Students
When I received this dictionary, I really didn't know what I should expect from it. The only other German dictionaries I'd ever used were the ones my teacher kept in her classroom. I took a course on German over the summer and I soon discovered that I really needed a vocabulary source more extensive than the glossary my textbook (Unsere Welt, © 1991 by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc.) had provided. Upon using the dictionary I was pleasantly surprised. Its small size is very convenient for transport to and from class. It takes up less space than a soda can and thus was no extra burden on my book load. Even more impressive, though, is the vast information this little book contains. I found all of the vocabulary words I needed in addition to many less common words that one doesn't expect find in an abridged dictionary. Another convenience is the "key word" feature that points out important words. Over all, it is a user-friendly reference, which I would recommend to any one who needs a comprehensive, portable dictionary--especially novice, intermediate, and advanced German students.

Great traveler!
Compact to the point, very useful travel dictionary... espcially helpful in Europe!

Tanks of World War II (The Collins/Jane's Gems)
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (September, 1995)
Authors: Jane's Information Group, Buffeteaut, and Restyn
Average review score:

Interested in WW2 Armor ?
It is very nice guide book with an excellent content part, all tanks are explained in a very brief way with identical history. Everybody interested in WW2 armor should see..

A fun little book for the casual reader
This book is in a very small format, with tiny illustrations, which means that it's easy to carry around. This is a benefit for wargamers (like me). All inn all, the tanks described are typical of the era, and the book is well worth the small amount it costs.

Great book, small package.
This is an excellent book, full of the common tanks, armored cars, tank destroyers, and some specialized varients, such as flamethrower tanks. Each is accompanied by a picture and detailed specs. My only complaint is the binding is rather weak, but for the price, well worth your money.
